Smoke from wildfires in the western U.S. and Canada is expected to impact air quality in the Bay Area on Thursday and Friday. Residents in affected areas should stay alert to news coverage and health warnings related to smoke. Check air quality at fire.airnow.gov and take steps to protect your health from smoke. Learn how at www.baaqmd.gov/wildfiresafety. Pollution levels are not expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard. A Spare the Air Alert is not in effect.

Kevin G. Ruano Hernandez
Kevin G. Ruano Hernandez, 18, is an Environmental Justice Organizer representing Richmond and San Pablo on the Youth Seat for the Bay Area Air Quality Management District Community Advisory Council. He is a member of the AB 617 Community Emissions Reductions Plan steering committee and the Monitoring Outreach Team for Richmond and San Pablo.
He grew up in Richmond and San Pablo, surrounded by classmates and community members suffering from chronic respiratory illnesses by the local refineries. He found his passion in Environmental Justice through his interest in Public Health and the AB 617 process. He joined several nonprofits and their initiatives, such as: Communities for a Better Environment, Groundwork Richmond, Earth Team, Youth vs. Apocalypse, and his organization, Green Ink. Kevin’s roles involve creating and deploying indoor AQ sensors and community organizing by uplifting community voices on the climate crisis and other pollution emitters in the community and assisting with organizing actions.
In addition, Kevin is a Junior Environmental Engineer with Ramboll’s Air Quality team. His mission is to achieve health equity for all disadvantaged communities by collaborating with local community groups and advocating for the most vulnerable communities impacted by local sources of pollution.
