Exempt Wood Stove Registration

Learn how to register your EPA-certified or pellet-fueled wood stove for a sole source of heat exemption from Winter Spare the Air Alert burn bans.

On October 21, 2015, the Air District’s Board of Directors adopted amendments to the Air District’s wood burning regulation.

As a result, effective November 1, 2016, Regulation 6, Rule 3, Section 110.1 requires anyone who wishes to claim an exemption from Winter Spare the Air Alert burn bans because his or her sole source of heat is a wood-burning device to utilize an EPA-certified or pellet-fueled device that is registered with the Air District. An open hearth fireplace will no longer qualify for an exemption.

You must register your EPA-certified or pellet-fueled device with the Air District to be exempt from the burn ban alerts by November 1, 2016 or you will no longer be exempt and will be subject to penalties for violation of the wood burning rule.

The Air District launched a Wood Smoke Reduction Incentive Program on August 26, 2016 to upgrade homeowners to cleaner alternatives to wood burning.
